Post-Operative Recovery
Immediate Recovery
After your surgery, you will be closely monitored during your initial recovery period. Your caregiver will be updated on your progress and will be able to join you as soon as you are medically stable. The duration of your stay at Upper Mississippi Surgery Center will depend on the specific procedure performed, the type of anesthesia used, and when you meet the discharge criteria. Our goal is to ensure you return home to your familiar, comfortable environment as soon as possible.
Before Discharge
Prior to being discharged, a nurse will go over the physician's written instructions with you and your caregiver. You will receive a copy of these discharge instructions to take home.
Once You Are Home
- Caregiver Support: Ensure that someone stays with you for the first 24 hours after your surgery.
- Discomfort and Drowsiness: It is normal to feel some discomfort at the surgical site, as well as drowsiness or dizziness, depending on the anesthesia and pain medication.
- Follow Instructions: Adhere strictly to your physician's guidelines regarding diet, physical activity, and medication.
- Avoid Certain Activities: For at least 24 hours after surgery, do not drive, operate heavy machinery or power tools, cook, drink alcohol, make legal decisions, or take any medications not prescribed by your physician.
Contacting Your Physician
Reach out to your physician if you encounter any of the following issues after discharge:
- Fever above 101°F
- Redness, swelling, or discharge at the surgical site
- Severe pain unrelieved by prescribed pain medication
- Persistent nausea and/or vomiting
- Difficulty urinating
If you are unable to contact your physician but feel that your symptoms require medical attention, go to the nearest emergency room.
Follow-Up Call
A staff member from Upper Mississippi Surgery Center will call you the day after your surgery to check on your recovery. If your surgery takes place on a Friday, expect a call on Monday.
